About

Little Knock is Vietnamese street food, made just for you.

We offer a rotating menu of traditional Vietnamese dishes, most of which are recipes taught to us by our grandma, though we've been known to combine our love of American and Vietnamese comfort food (hence the String Cheese Spring Roll.)

You can find us every month at the Underground Market and at Rice Paper Scissors, a Vietnamese pop-up cafe.

Bio

Little Knock is a project by Valerie Luu, a twenty-something, Bay Area-bred, first-generation Vietnam-American. (Who apparently loves hyphens.)

In New Orleans for the week.
Pictured here is the fourth po’ boy I’ve eaten and there’s still more to be consumed. New Orleans is my comfort food dream come true.
I’ll be back in the beginning of July to announce some exciting new projects and hopefully cook up some of the food I ate while I was here. See y’all then!

Vietnamese Deli Style

Mushroom pate chaud, part of my Vietnamese deli inspired menu for the Underground Market

I just recently started a job close to Oakland’s Chinatown, so lunchtime means Vietnamese delis and Chinese dim sum joints - all in the name of research and deliciously cheap lunches.

My June Underground Market menu reflects what I’ve been nomming on:

Bánh Pâté Chaud

Vietnamese Pot Pie with Mushroom Pate

Chè Bắp

Corn Rice Pudding with Coconut Milk

Chè Ba Màu

Three Color Dessert

Swing by the Underground Market tomorrow, Saturday June 11th at Public Works. I’ll be there from 11am-midnight (you might even meet my Mom, who’ll be holdin’ down the fort!)

Scored some quail eggs at work today!
My heart’s racing just thinking about all the recipes I want to try out with these precious eggs (brought back from Shasta by my co-workers). It so happens I’m inviting a few friends over for dinner tomorrow to experiment with new dishes for Little Knock, so these eggs couldn’t have come at a better time.
As a kid, my grandma used to give them to us as a treat; they were always sold at the counter at the asian mart and we’d never leave without getting them. Can’t wait to fry them up, add them in soups and crepes tomorrow. Will keep you guys updated :)

Flashback: Our spread from April’s Underground Market

Memorial Day weekend is the first weekend I’ve taken off in three months. It’s been crazy since Katie and I started Rice Paper Scissors in February. We take almost a month to plan each event, and combined with the Underground Market and random gigs, almost every day of the week is booked.

Not to say I don’t love it. I love the hustle. I love coming up with new dishes, running around and getting all my groceries, carrying tons of shit up and down the stairs, prepping for days (and sometimes up to the last minute) so I can cook up food for people on the street.

It keeps me on my toes, and not to mention fit (those stairs are a workout).

And it doesn’t feel quite right having the weekend off, but a girl’s gotta get some sleep. In addition, I’m going to use the next week to experiment with new recipes, make a much-needed sign, and start planning out my next couple events.
I miss being out there. See you guys soon, I hope.

Unpacking my bags (and by bags, I mean blog posts)

Just moved over to tumblr, and oh, does it feel so good!

++ I’m moving all my Little Knock-related entries over from my old blog, Of Course, which will be dedicated to profiling San Francisco food makers.
